Native to isolated pockets in the mountains of Canaan Valley in West Virginia. Great choice for Christmas tree production and wildlife cover. Highly adaptable to many soil conditions even wet, poorly drained areas. Avoid heavy wet clay. A later bud break makes it less susceptible to spring frost injury. Shade tolerant, drought tolerant once established, and fairly deer resistant.
