Women supporting and mentoring women. The BCCD knows how important agriculture production is to our community and the dedication it takes from everyone to keep a family farm and business running. While we often see men working the machines and fields, we can often miss the labor women are doing back on the homestead. In an effort to bring these women together to celebrate each other's successes the BCCD hosts an annual Women in Agriculture Day.
This free, catered event is a fun filled day of in-depth discussion, business modeling, and networking for agricultural women in Bradford and surrounding counties. It is not only for well-established farmers, but also women who are just starting out and looking to find mentors in the field of agriculture. |
Why does it matter?
By bringing women of agriculture together and allowing them to speak and spread ideas, we are helping strengthen our agriculture community and create a collective voice for farmers and producers in Bradford and surrounding counties. |
Sharing insight to build a stronger community. The BCCD understands that agriculture is not just field crop and dairy. It is also the small farms that create valuable products for our community. With this in mind we work to invite speakers from all types of agriculture and production backgrounds, such as:
|
Cultivating more relationships in the agriculture field. The best way to build relationships starts by having some fun! The BCCD wants everyone who attends to feel engaged with what they are learning and with the people they are meeting. Our aim is to cultivate stronger connections within our farming community by uniting women through enjoyable activities and delicious food.
All of us have something to bring to the table when it comes to insight and life experience. By bringing women from all stages and levels of agriculture together, we will be able to carry forward long-lasting traditions and inspire newer generations along the way. |
Amanda Miller- Sugar Branch Farms
Amanda and her husband and her family own and operate a 600 jersey cow farm in Columbia Cross Roads, PA. Amanda and her husband Rob moved back to the area ten years ago to join the Van Blarcom Family at the home dairy farm and at that time, expanded the farm into a cropping operation as well. Today they farm about 3500 acres of crops - corn, beans, hay and wheat. Prior to farming, both Amanda and her husband worked in the ag-industry - from ag-banking to marketing and communications. These skills have served them both well as they have expanded the dairy farm in a seed business (Sopertown Seeds) as well as Miller's Corn Maze, a seasonal agri-tourism business for the farm. |
Jenna Ashby-Bluebird Ridge Farms & The Bluebird Food Truck
Jenna and husband, Jeremy, run The Bluebird Food Truck and Bluebird Ridge Farms. On their farm they raise pasture Berkshire pork, pasture chicken and grassfed and finished Angus Cattle. They take pride in how their animals are raised and how their cattle and chickens rotationally graze 58 acres of lush pastures all summer long. The need of a market for their farm meats led them down the path where they would create the business, The Bluebird Food Truck. (Nicknamed, The Bluebird) The Bluebird is a commercial kitchen on wheels where Jenna and her family create ready to eat dishes to sell to the public using all meat from their own farm. Her smashburgers and fried chicken sandwiches are the two biggest sellers. Jenna and her family have traveled to several different counties with the food trailer along with a few in New York State. Bringing their sustainable farm practice products to customers all over. Liz Owen - Growen Food
Liz and Tim Owen share a passion for providing locally grown food to their friends, family and community. That has been at the core of Growen Food's business and farm model since its incorporation in 2017. Starting at just one weekly farmer's market nine years ago, now Tim and Liz own and operate a brick-and-mortar retail store and kitchen while still farming vegetables and mushrooms. Located in Ridgebury Township, Bradford County at 13584 Berwick Turnpike, they sell and prepare produce that is grown in their own gardens and carry retail grocery items from dozens of other local farms and artisans. In addition to filling the retail coolers, the produce that is grown on-site is showcased as the main ingredients in the kitchen. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Liz can cook a one-of-a-kind pizza made with cheese from a local dairy farm and also makes great sandwiches and salads. Heather Edwards-Edwards Family Homestead
